PHP weblogging

On another website of mine in development, I have been documenting progress with a PHP blog tool called Serendipity. Serendipity is relatively recent, and last week went to version 0.6. But 0.7 is just around the corner and key features are getting added.

The mailing list has been a buzz for the last few weeks for this project - and it’s great that there will now be some good-looking styles going with the next version - what I had felt was lacking before. The advantages of a PHP based blog are numerous, and the inclusion of XHTML standard WYSIWYG entry editor will be an exciting addition too - probably by 0.8 I think. Once it gets a better user interface which non-technical people can use, it should become quite popular as a way to begin weblogging. I think a lot of non-techie people had trouble with the MT Perl install available to them on their hosting package, and PHP is a bit simpler to get working if it isn’t already. I’m running my Serendipity install with Postgres too, without any mishaps so far. It is still way behind MT in robustness, features and UI, but as a simple, free publishing system the Serendipity stuff is gonna be ace.
