RTFM Nokia e61 s60 3rd connection settings defaults

hmmm, only just stumbled upon this incredibly useful tip for s60 data connections (which access point you want to use, and the default of many dialogs…). Since I have a unlimited surf/email deal on T-Mobile, this is really annoying. It always asks me do I want to let it use the network / a data connection?

If you go to Tools folder > App Manager > then pick app you are interested in, but don’t click on it, click on Options on the left softkey, scroll to Suite Settings and you can set the defaults here! So useful, but like so many nice features hidden away and not published very many places. If app is a Java one (as opposed to .SIS / Symbian native) or is Unsigned* (see below) . The option to choose is Connectivity > Always Allow. Great for my increasingly trusty e61 phone. :)
btw, if you are a Symbian s60 / E61 user and want to comment on any of my posts, please do and just email me — address on the left. My blog needs a rework, with WordPress and to allow comments, but I will do this later in the year when I have worked out all the nitty gritty.

Related to this is Access Points and Access Point Groups, which I have found problematic. You should use Access Point Groups if for some apps you like to have just work on either wireless connection, when at home, or GPRS and 3g if they are apps you don’t use at home, or some other location. I am thinking they have fixed this in later firmware for the E61, but T-Mobile UK have not released any later phone firmware for the E61, as they are pretty backward and crap - still having the T-Zones walled garden settings on the phone shows how slack they have been in polishing their release of this phone. Write / email to them if you have a E61 and want to see the firmware updated (Nokia have had v3 out for a while, T-Mobile UK Are stuck on v1.06 as I Write this..terrible!) It’s totally simple for them to update….bah! I don’t fancy voiding my warranty by flashing the firmware, plus I don’t have a PC to hand to do the laborious process.

* Only a few applications seem to have the expensive Symbian signing allowed. This means they cannot use all features of the phone as easily. Permissions have to be given. It’s all very confusing (to me anyway)!
